External advisor to Rio Tinto for social assessment and impact mitigation, community consultation and resettlement during permitting of a potash mine. Escondida Foundation – Chile. Part of a five person audit team to evaluate the Escondida Foundation’s activities and effectiveness at meeting its organizational goals, on behalf of owners BHP, Rio Tinto, and the IFC. AES Aurora – Honduras and El Salvador. Led team responsible for social impact assessment, public consultation, and design/documentation of resettlement for a power plant and 400+km. transmission line. Social Risk and Due Diligence Assessments Carbones de Cerrejon – Colombia. Strategic review of corporate management of social, community and indigenous issues in an operating mine relative to changing international standards; review of community relations, company foundations and social management capacity. Billiton International Development – England. Review of group’s exposure to social conflict and risk from exploration and acquisitions globally through assessment of strategies, procedures and internal capacity at regional offices. Served as social specialist for IFC’s social and environmental review group over three year period, reviewed and provided guidance to various IFC client companies. Export Development Canada – Dominican Republic. Ongoing supervision as social specialist for compliance with World Bank resettlement standards for a Canadian funded sewage and water system and social reconstruction project. Compania Minera Antamina/MIGA – Peru. Independent review of resettlement, community relations and community development programs for several years, compliance with World Bank standards and corporate social policies. Stakeholder Engagement and Community Relations Anglo American Michiquillay – Peru. Support project team in the development and implementation of community relations, stakeholder engagement, enhancement of local benefits, social risk management, and sustainable development for a large copper deposit recently privatized. Placer Dome Exploration – Chile. Review of socio-cultural context and history of communities associated with an exploration Project. Development of engagement strategy and community consultation/capacity building. i Bear Creek Mining – Peru. Undertook initial assessments, developed engagement strategies and provided training to internal staff.

Susan is a sociologist with 20 years experience in rural development issues, with 12 of those working directly in social aspects of the mining and oil and gas industries. Her specialties include the assessment of relations between communities and resource development activities, the development of effective strategies towards long-term relationships and the creation of sustainable benefits for local communities. She works at both corporate and project levels to develop strategies for companies to reach compliance with internal policies as well as international best practice in the management of social issues in resource development.
